Mail

Submit a change of address with USPS online or at a post office. Mail is forwarded for a limited time, so update your address directly with everyone who sends you mail.

Utilities in the Austin area

  • Inside Austin city limits: City of Austin Utilities handles electricity (Austin Energy), water (Austin Water) and trash and recycling (Austin Resource Recovery) on one account.
  • Surrounding cities: electricity may come from a co-op such as Pedernales Electric Cooperative or Bluebonnet Electric Cooperative, or a retail provider you choose. Water and trash are usually through the city or a utility district.
  • Gas: Texas Gas Service covers much of the Austin area.
  • Internet: check which providers serve your exact address, and book installation early.

Accounts to update

  • Banks, credit cards and loans
  • Employer and payroll
  • Insurance: auto, home or renters, health
  • Doctors, dentists, pharmacies and vets
  • Schools and daycare
  • Subscriptions and online shopping accounts
  • Voter registration (in Texas, with your county)
  • IRS and the Texas Comptroller if you run a business

New to Texas?

New residents generally have 90 days to get a Texas driver license from the Department of Public Safety, and 30 days to register a vehicle with their county tax office. Check DPS and TxDMV for current requirements, including emissions testing in Travis and Williamson counties.
